Robert JACOBSEN (1912-1993) Small Totem or Standing Man, cir - Lot 279
Robert JACOBSEN (1912-1993) Small Totem or Standing Man, circa 1950/60. Welded and oxidized iron Artist's base in light wood 42 x 11 cm. Danish school Direct-cut sculptor in wood and stone, he soon concentrated on working with iron, which he never abandoned. He moved to Paris in 1947, and did not return to his native country until 1969.
Winner of the Venice Biennale in 1966, he exhibited in numerous galleries in Copenhagen, Paris and Munich, and between 1991 and 1992, retrospectives of his work were organized at the Musée Matisse in Le Cateau Cambrésis, the Musée Denys Puech in Rodez, as well as in Meymac, St Priest, Evreux, Oslo, Liège, Amsterdam, The Hague, Pau and Paris. The Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris holds some of his works.
His work in cold-welded iron, with its deliberate oxidation and anthropomorphic forms, classifies him in the "Cobra" aesthetic. Towards the end of his life, his sculptures became more structured, with a geometric tendency, in which welded and painted iron squares and triangles are set in space. Most of his works are marked with his monogram R. J. or are unsigned.J. or unsigned. The "raw" sculptures we are presenting today are among the most sought-after by collectors. They were acquired directly from the artist in Meymac, his French home, by the father of Mr. Jean Philippe Esther, the current owner.
