[DUHAMEL du MONCEAU] - Lot 340
[DUHAMEL du MONCEAU] Descriptions des Arts et Métiers, faites ou approuvées par Messieurs de l'Académie Royale des Sciences. A Paris, chez Moutard, 1762-1788, 24 volumes in-folio (tomés I to XXV, without II) bound in full contemporary shagreened basane, ornate ribbed spines, title and chapter headpieces, some damaged headpieces and cracked spines. First (and sometimes second) edition of the first encyclopedic description of arts and crafts in France. It precedes and prefigures Diderot's Encyclopédie. The Description des Arts et Métiers comprises a total of 80 titles, 18 of which are signed by Duhamel du Monceau, the others by Réaumur, de La Lande, Roubo, Garsault, Courtivon, Malouin, Bedos de Celles and others. These volumes, published under the title Art d'un métier spécifique (art du tonnelier, du facteur d'orgues ou du tanneur, etc.), were sold separately, making it virtually impossible to find a complete collection of all the titles. It comprises 68 parts in 24 volumes, and is illustrated with 1,498 copper-engraved plates, some of them double or folding. Detailed description on request.
