FRANCIS BACON (1909-1992) - Lot 534
FRANCIS BACON (1909-1992) Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1975, lithograph, 114 x 85 cm, margins (on view) 129 x 95 (probable margins approx. 140 x 110 cm) (Sabatier 11), fine proof printed in color, before text, signed and numbered 182/100, overall good condition, unexamined out of frame, edition of 200 proofs before text and 170 proofs with text for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In this 1975 lithograph, Francis Bacon transposes his pictorial universe into the medium of printmaking. The figure, often isolated, appears distorted, as if subjected to an invisible pressure. Features become distorted, flesh seems shifting and unstable. Lithography, with its blacks and contrasts, accentuates this contained violence. The space is reduced, almost closed, leaving the figure to face itself. No narrative: just a tense, vulnerable presence. Even in print, Bacon retains the essential - a painting of the human condition, where the body becomes the site of raw psychic intensity.
