Hans HARTUNG (1904-1989) - Lot 508
Hans HARTUNG (1904-1989) P1969-A15, 1969 India ink, pastel and scratchboard Baryta cardboard Signed and dated lower right 74.5 x104.5 cm Estimate on request. In an e-mail dated May 2025, the Hartung-Bergman Foundation states that this work is included in the catalog raisonné of Hans Hartung's work. In P1969-A15, Hans Hartung pushes the gesture to its extreme tension. Ink traces rapid, incisive, almost nervous lines. Pastel introduces muted areas, while scratching cuts into the surface, as if to reveal buried energy. Matter is worked, attacked, set in vibration. Nothing is descriptive: everything is gesture. Each stroke carries an intensity, a direction, an impulse. The work doesn't represent - it records. In this way, Hartung constructs an abstract, direct style, in which the painting becomes the site of a confrontation between movement, matter and time. Scratching appeared in Hans Hartung's work at the end of the 1950s. It developed fully in the 1960s. Hartung worked with fresh paint using tools such as combs and scrapers. The gesture no longer drew, but incised the material. This technique became central around 1965-1970, the period of the work we present.
