Georges VALMIER (1885 - 1937) - Lot 507
Georges VALMIER (1885 - 1937) Still life, 1926 Gouache on paper Signed and dated lower right 11.1 x 14.5 cm Georges Valmier moved to Montmartre in 1918, after having met Albert Gleize during his mobilization in Toul in 1914. He found a loyal patron in Léonce Rosenberg in 1921. Between 1924 and 1927, the period of creation of the gouache presented here, Georges Valmier published most of his works in the "Bulletin de l'effort moderne", for which he designed the cover. A message from Marthe Domec née Valmier on the back of the sheet, the artist's daughter, certifies this gouache as "Oeuvre authentique de mon père Georges Valmier, Paris le 9 mai 1974". Provenance : Aponem sale, Hôtel des ventes de Pontoise, June 18, 2011, lot 205. French Private Collection. In his 1926 Nature morte, Georges Valmier no longer describes objects: he organizes them. Vases, glasses and fruit remain, but transformed into colored planes and geometric rhythms. Cubism, for him, becomes lighter: the structure remains, but color is emancipated. Vivid tones - pinks, blues, yellows - enliven the composition like a score. Space is no longer deep; it's constructed. Each form responds to another, in an almost musical balance. The object disappears as reality to become part of a pictorial order. In this way, still life ceases to be silent: it becomes vibration, harmony, color architecture. Please ask for the condition reports: they are not included in the descriptions.
