Prince Shahram Pahlavi Collection, London. In Beethoven (1969), Serge Charchoune does not seek to represent the composer, but to translate his energy. Painting becomes musical equivalent. Forms are repeated and intertwined, like sound motifs. The structure is rhythmic: variations, repetitions, tensions. Nothing descriptive - everything proceeds from an inner movement. Color plays the role of tonality, modulating space and creating visual chords. Figurative elements, if they remain, are absorbed into this orchestration. In this way, Charchoune is not painting Beethoven, but a musical thought transposed into painting - an inhabited, almost sonorous abstraction.
