Bernard BUFFET (1928-1999) - Lot 503
Bernard BUFFET (1928-1999) House with blue shutters, 1975 Watercolor and gouache on paper Signed and dated 1975 top-center left 51 x 65 cm Provenance : - French private collection, Paris, 8th arrondissement, then by descent. A certificate of authenticity dated May 30, 1978 issued by Maurice Garnier will be given to the buyer. With Bernard Buffet, around 1975, the house is no longer a simple motif: it becomes a mental structure. Isolated, often frontal, it stands in a bare, almost lifeless space. The incisive black line cuts through the forms with harshness. The lines are angular and taut, as if the architecture itself were subject to an inner tension. The limited use of color reinforces this impression of dryness and silence. These landscapes do not describe a place; they impose a presence. The house appears closed in, almost inhospitable, as if frozen in a solitude with no way out. For Buffet, the landscape becomes a state - an austere, rigorous vision, where the world seems reduced to its essential lines.
