Jimmy Pike (c.1940 - 2002) - Lot 385
Jimmy Pike (c.1940 - 2002) The crossing Silkscreen on paper 26 x 32 cm Signed and numbered "30/99" in pencil lower left Note: Jimmy Pike was born around 1940 east of Japingka, an important permanent watering place in the Great Sandy Desert, and grew up as a hunter-gatherer. Like many of his fellows, he migrated north towards the river valleys and the sheep and cattle ranches where food was more abundant. Living on the bangs of the Cherrabun station, he eventually joined relatives at the station camp and worked as a cowherd. A cattle station manager christened him Jimmy Pike, after the Phar Lap jockey. Pike learned to use Western art materials during his time in Fremantle prison. Even before his release, his work was exhibited in major Australian galleries. In 1989, Pike was featured in a documentary entitled The Quest of Jimmy Pike. He illustrated a book entitled "Jimmy and Pat Meet the Queen" with his wife Pat Lowe. Pike has collaborated with his wife on several other books. He has exhibited his work in the UK, the Philippines, China, Namibia and Italy. During a solo exhibition of his paintings at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in London in 1998, Pike and his wife Pat Lowe attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace. He organized a joint exhibition with Zhou Xiaoping at the National Gallery of China in Beijing, entitled "Through the Eyes of Two Cultures". He was the first Australian painter to exhibit there. Pike died of a heart attack on November 3, 2002 in Derby, Western Australia. Please ask for condition reports: they are not included in the descriptions.
