Ivory is a material often used for two reasons: it's easy to carve and thus allows a wide variety of shapes, and it's a noble material, imported into Japan, which is therefore prestigious. The demand for precious Japanese objects for the European market was therefore very strong, and ivory objects met this demand, frequently carved with scenes from Japanese folklore.
