19th century school Portrait of General Joubert Oil on recta - Lot 194
19th century school Portrait of General Joubert Oil on rectangular panel Cracked gilded wood frame (missing) Panel: 24.5 x 19.5 cm Barthélemy Catherine Joubert, born on April 14, 1769 in Pont-de-Vaux (a town in the royal province of Bresse, now the department of Ain) and died on August 15, 1799 at the battle of Novi in Italy, was a general of the French Revolution, a product of the national volunteer battalions of 1791.
Enlisted in 1791 as a volunteer soldier, he became brigadier general in June 1795, and division general in December 1796, in the Army of Italy, commanded by General Bonaparte. Judged hostile to the Directoire, devoid of ambition and beloved by the soldiers, he was chosen in 1799 by the Directors Barras and Sieyès to lead the coup d'état of 30 prairial an VII (June 18, 1799)[1], which did not put an end to the Directoire. He was killed during a new campaign in Italy, where he had been appointed General-in-Chief, in order to gain prestige[2], and it was Bonaparte who carried out the final coup d'état on Brumaire 18 (November 9, 1799), greatly assisted by his brother Lucien. Napoleon would later write in his Memoirs: "Joubert claimed nothing less than to attempt what I executed in Brumaire".
