[LAMARTINE - Autographs] - Lot 8
[LAMARTINE - Autographs]
Set of 15 signed autograph letters or signed bills or signed letters from Alphonse de Lamartine, between 1836 and 1864, sometimes on stationery with his crowned cipher, concerning subscription renewals to the Journal "Le Pays"(1852, 1856), about a petition on the supervision of released convicts (1841), thanks, and especially two long signed autograph letters from February and March 1862.
In the first, he refers to a false rumor about his supposed illness, which was preventing him from writing just as he was about to publish his complete works in 40 volumes: "This news was fortunately false, as providence, which is testing me in the evening of my life, is at least preserving my health and work, the weapons in my battle with ill fortune. Need I tell you that this malicious assertion immediately suspended all subscriptions to my complete works, the only means of liberation for me, the only resource of those to whom I owe my work". (2 pages in-4).
In the second letter, dated March 24, 1862, he describes his financial difficulties and asks for a loan:
"On the eve of an expropriation and forced sale of my property, a sale more immense for my creditors than for myself, I believed in the hearts of my literary friends, and I was not mistaken. The eagerness of my subscribers to prevent this extremity by means of a loan, insignificant for each of them and liberating for me, has been as prompt as it has been cordial (...). I still need one hundred and twenty thousand francs to prevent the judicial sale of the pledge of these needy creditors, who would only find disappointment in the price of these properties decimated by the costs of Justice, etc, etc."
Attached to this set are 6 signed autograph letters and one signed letter from his wife Elisa Birch (from 1840 to 1857), including one of 3 1/2 pages concerning a "book of simple and clear, familiar applications, for the Association formed to instruct and bring back to the right path young girls who have strayed from it", - one signed autograph letter from Valentine de Cessiat, niece of the poet, dated March 1870, - an autograph letter signed by his father "Lamartine aîné", dated 2 floréal an 13 (April 1805), - and finally, 3 autograph letters signed by the writer and poet Adam Salmon relating to Lamartine, addressed to "Maître" Auguste Dorchain, also a writer, 2 of which with stamped envelopes (1924, 1925).
