David Smith, born in 1906, is best known as a sculptor, but his ink drawings from 1957 reveal another facet of his work. In these compositions, he transposes his sense of volume and space to the surface of paper, blending fluid lines and dynamic forms. These drawings, often improvised, bear witness to his gestural energy and his interest in abstraction. They reflect the same tension as her metal sculptures, but with a new, almost musical lightness.
