ANSELM KIEFER (B. 1945) - Lot 49
ANSELM KIEFER (B. 1945) Gang durchs Rote Meer, 1987 Book, collage of lead sheets on photographs (16 pages) 43 x 43 x 5 cm PROVENANCE Former André Bernheim and Claude de Soria collection. Galerie Yvon Lambert, 1992. Anselm Kiefer, a German artist born in 1945, is known for his monumental works exploring history, mythology and collective memory. "Gang durchs Rote Meer" (1987) is a collage on lead sheet, composed as a 16-page book, which illustrates his unique approach to art. In this work, Kiefer uses lead, a heavy, symbolic material often associated with alchemical transformation and memory. "Gang durchs Rote Meer" (meaning "Passage through the Red Sea") refers to the biblical episode of the Exodus, symbolizing passage, transformation and survival. The lead pages, stamped with a variety of textures and materials, create a powerful, tactile visual narrative. This book-sculpture is a continuation of Kiefer's practice, which seeks to link past and present, myth and history, using raw materials charged with meaning to invite profound reflection on the human condition and collective memory.
