Ottoman Syria, Aleppo or Jerusalem, mid-16th century - Lot 115
Ottoman Syria, Aleppo or Jerusalem, mid-16th century
Square siliceous ceramic facing tile, painted in black under a green glaze, decorated with a network of palmettes and flowers (restorations and repaints on the edges, and one corner missing). In an antique wooden frame marked "Damas".
Size: 19 x 19 cm
A similar tile is published in Arthur Millner, Damascus Tiles, Editions Prestel, fig. 6.125, p. 299, in three different glazes: green, yellow and blue. The green glaze is reminiscent of four tiles probably from Aleppo in the Khalili collection (Michael Rogers, Empire of the Sultans, Ottoman Art from the collection of Nasser D. Khalili, Musée Rath, Geneva, 1995, cat. 131, p. 194).
Provenance :
- Former Paris Private Collection of Victor Emile Gabriel CHEVALLIER (1889-1969) and his wife Marguerite Jeanne VEREL (1887-1962)
- Mr. X's collection from 1969, then passed on through two estates to the current owner.
