CHINA - 19th century Bronze baluster-shaped snuff bottle with incised decoration on one side of a dragon rising from the waves, the other side sunken, two handles decorated with flowers. On the reverse, the apocryphal mark Shunzhi sannian Cheng Rongzhang zao (made by Cheng Rongzhang in the third year of Shunzhi - 1646). Coral (corallium rubrum) and metal stopper H. 6 cm Provenance : - Former Stempel collection. - Millon - Jutheau sale, April 1, 1987, lot 367 and reproduced in the catalog. Reference: - Exhibited at the Museum of Art, Hong Kong, October 15 - November 16, 1977, n°236, p.100. - Illustrated in V. Jutheau, "Le guide du collectionneur de tabatières chinoises", p.48 full page (recto), then fig. 1 P. 51 (verso). - A similar piece with the same mark in Robert Hall, The Chinese snuff bottles XI. The snowy Peaks Collection, London, 2005, n°98 and in A congregation of Snuffe Bottle Connoisseurs, An Exhibition of Chinese Snuff Bottles, n°226, p.226. - A similar piece in Bob C. Stevens, Les tabatières chinoises, Office du Livre, Fribourg, 1980, no. 808. Note: - "By an abuse of language, it is mentioned that the sale of June 10 was "under the aegis of Viviane Jutheau" whereas it is a tribute to Viviane Jutheau. All the snuffboxes presented under n- 251 to 392 (with the exception of n-342, as indicated in the catalog) were acquired at sales organized by Me Jutheau. We have not been able to trace the provenance of lots 365, 392 and 336. All the snuffboxes come from the collection of a single Parisian connoisseur.
