CHINA - Early 20th century - Lot 92
CHINA - Early 20th century Headdress in cardboard, metal and kingfisher feathers, inlaid with rose quartz cabochons and red glass decorated with phoenix and dragon among flowers. Two standing figures on either side. A garland of glass beads adorns the front. (Misses and accidents). H. 21 cm The bridal headdress known as the "phoenix tiara" was worn by Han women on the occasion of their wedding, as well as for the most formal occasions - they are often depicted in portraits of ancestors. These headdresses are decorated using a kingfisher feather inlay technique known as diancui, whose origins date back over 2000 years. This headdress is remarkable for the profusion and quality of its decoration - partly articulated - whose characters and motifs are intended to express auspicious wishes. It features seven phoenixes (with cabochon-embellished bodies), five dragons among clouds and two moving-head figures on either side of a central medallion. The crown is surmounted by six characters, each depicted in a flamed medallion on a mirror background (the Sun and Moon, and an auspicious formula). At the back, two cranes surmounted by the longevity character support a shu ornament on the occiput. A similar headdress is preserved in the collections of the Musée Guimet.
