Tazra pendant - Lot 88
Tazra pendant
Morocco, Fez or Meknes, 18th-19th century
Almond-shaped pendant in openwork 375° gold set with gemstones (emeralds, rubies, garnets) and imitation stones on foil and fine pearls, the reverse chased.
Gross weight: 100 g. Height: 11.7 cm
A Gem-set enamelled gold pendant "Tazra", Morocco, 19th century
of drop form, comprising a central glass cut gem, within a border of pink rubies, an openwork foliate panel mounted with emeralds and pearls.
The "tazra" pendant, a traditional piece of city jewelry made by Jewish craftsmen in northern Morocco, signifies opulence. The richness of the gems blends virtuously with the finesse of the lace-like openwork metal. The numerous florets are reminiscent of the tulip, stylized to the extreme. This decorative motif has its origins in 16th-century Ottoman Turkey, extending its influence to the western part of the Maghreb. The success of this motif is probably due to its prophylactic virtue. The Turkish word for tulip, "lale", is written with the same characters as the moon, "hilal" and "Allah". By extension, therefore, the tulip symbolized divine protection over the woman's universe.
