David FERRAND. The Norman Muse. Published according to the Livres originaux, 1625-1653 and the Inventaire général of 1655. With introduction, notes and glossary by A. Héron. Rouen, 1891, 5 volumes in-8 bound in half-chagrin, spine with 4 raised bands, covers and spine preserved. Signed binding by Ateliers Laurenchet. Edition printed for the trade at 75 copies only, all numbered (n°74 signed by Héron). A fine copy. Reprint of two editions by David Ferrand, subtitled "Ou Recueil de plusieurs ouvrages facétieux en langue purinique ou gros normand" and "Où sont décrits plusieurs batailles, assauts, prises de villes, guerres étrangères, victoires de la France, histoires comiques, émotions populaires, grabuges et choses remarquables arrivées à Rouen depuis quarante années". Frère, 462-3: David Ferrand, a poet, printer and bookseller born in Rouen (circa 1589-1660), wrote several unusual works in rhymed Norman patois, otherwise known as purin, the language of the people of Rouen. His Muse is a popular book that is nonetheless an invaluable compendium for anyone wishing to learn about the mores and spirit of the people of Rouen in the 17th century.
