J. Le Paulmier de Grente Mesnil (St. Lô 1520-Caen 1588) is the author of the first complete treatise on cider, in which he considers this beverage superior to wine; it is reported that he became hypochondriac following the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, and withdrew to Normandy, where he owed his belated recovery mainly to cider. The Latin edition was translated into French by one of his pupils, Jacques de Chaignes, who made important additions, such as "Apologie du translateur contre l'usage du vin et du sidre sans eau".
