France - 14th CENTURY - Lot 56
France - 14th CENTURY Two dogs from a recumbent bed Carved stone, with traces of polychromy 20 x 31 x 11.5 cm and 21 x 33 x 11 cm (accidents and missing pieces) Former Pierre and Françoise Dumayet Collection, then Antoine Dumayet, then by descent to the current owners. These two dogs, originally leaning against each other, probably come from a female funeral monument. A symbol of fidelity, while the lion evokes strength and courage, the dog lying at the feet of the deceased watches over her eternal rest. It can also accompany the recumbents of religious figures, symbolizing fidelity to vows taken. This type of animal representation appeared in funerary sculpture in the 13th century and continued until the 16th century.
