ALBERT ANKER (1831-1910) - Lot 271
ALBERT ANKER (1831-1910) Portrait of the man with the pipe, 1907 Watercolor on paper, signed lower right and dated 35 x 25 cm Fading and small dent A student of Gleyre, Anker developed a very personal style and became the "national painter" of Switzerland because of his popular representations of the rural life of his country in the 19th century. In September 1901, Anker suffered a stroke that temporarily paralyzed his right hand. This disability made it impossible for him to work on large canvases. In a comfortable working position - sitting on a chair with a sheet of paper on his lap - he painted watercolors, more than 500 of them, with minimalist pencil sketches. Albert Anker died on July 16, 1910 in Ins. The work we present is a very personal work from the end of the artist's life, 1907, three years before his death. The portrait is delicate, the drawing always very precise and the colors arranged in a harmonious ochre and beige cameo.
