VIETNAM for Europe - Late 19th century Large carved wooden altar, openwork and inlaid with mother-of-pearl and bone, the upper part with two levels each opening by four doors, decorated with dragons surrounding celadon jade (nephrite) plates, inlaid with peonies, chrysanthemums and birds, the openwork leaves with offering bearers and Taoist deities, the openwork sides with bats, digested lemons, pomegranates and peaches. Dim. 186,7 x 198 x 64,4 cm Provenance: Filatriau Collection, Ader sale, 9-10 November 1936, Drouot, room 10, lot 402 Born in Pondicherry, Léonce Filatriau (1875-1943) was the son of a Lieutenant Governor and Secretary General of Pondicherry. He began his career in the government of Pondicherry before being transferred at the end of 1902 to the Finance Office of the General Government of Indochina (Vietnam). He spent nearly 35 years in the Far East and built up an important collection which he decided to sell on his return to France in 1936. His collection was dispersed in two sales in November 1936. Wishing to return to Asia, the war decided otherwise and he died in Paris in 1943 at the age of 68.
