Marcel André BOURAINE (1886-1948) - Lot 120
Marcel André BOURAINE (1886-1948) Penthelese, Queen of the Amazons Bronze, brown-black patina Lost wax casting by Susse Signed "Bouraine" and "Susse Fres Edtrs Paris" on the plinth 45 x 83 x 22 cm Marcel André Bouraine (1886-1948) is a French sculptor. He studied sculpture under the direction of Joseph-Alexandre Falguière. Captured by the Germans during the First World War, he was interned in Switzerland. Back in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries in 1922. He participated in the art competition of the Summer Olympics in 1924. In Greek mythology, Penthelesia is the queen of the Amazons. She distinguishes herself by her numerous exploits in front of the besieged city, then succumbs during a fight against Achilles who falls in love with her by seeing her die. Thersite then mocks this passion, considered as weakness, and Achilles kills him. Diomède, a relative of Thersite, throws the body of the Amazon into the Scamandre, in revenge. According to other versions, Achilles buried her body on the banks of the Scamander. This legend around the powerful warrior queen will be very present during the Middle Ages until the XXth century in the arts. The sculpture we present comes from a French Private Collection. The muscularity, strength and speed of the Queen of the Amazons appear clearly in this powerfully profiled sculpture.
