Attributed to Jean-Baptiste DEBRET (Paris 1768-1848) "Scène - Lot 65
Attributed to Jean-Baptiste DEBRET (Paris 1768-1848) "Scène de l'histoire de l'indépendance du Brésil, vers 1822" Brown glaze on black pencil line. 26.5 x 35 cm Annotated indistinctly at bottom right. Insolated, small tears on edges, small stains, lined. This appears to be a representation of an act of allegiance from the provinces of Brazil to Prince Regent Don Pedro in 1822. Appointed Regent in 1821 after his father King Don Juan VI left for Portugal, Don Pedro accepted the title of perpetual defender of Brazil on 13 May 1822. He challenged the decree of recolonisation issued by the Cortes. He was crowned constitutional emperor of Brazil on December 1, 1822. Debret moved to Brazil in 1816 and entered the service of Don Juan VI. He settled in Rio de Janeiro and became close to Don Pedro, who admired Napoleon I. He is consulted by the Emperor to elaborate the national flag with green and yellow colours. Returned to France in 1831 he will publish a Picturesque and Historical Journey to Brazil, sold in 1834-1835.
