Fabius BREST (1823-1900) - Lot 93
Fabius BREST (1823-1900) Turks and their caicos, Bosphorus Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 36 x 60 cm Original canvas, cracks and slight lacks. Important original frame in stuccoed and gilded wood, with canals and foliage in classical style. With a cartouche of the Société des amis des arts de Bordeaux. Exhibition: - Society of Friends of the Arts of Bordeaux, 1868. Fabius Brest painted for about twenty years the visual memories of his four-year stay in Turkey, which he carried out from 1855 onwards. Between 1857 and 1896, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and in French salons, many paintings evoking Istanbul and the lively life of the Bosphorus. Our painting, with its clear and soft light, is characteristic of the art of Brest, which knows how to poetize a small village on the banks of the Bosphorus with its fishermen in multicoloured costumes.
