Fabius BREST (1823-1900) Turks and their... - Lot 111 - Aponem
Fabius BREST (1823-1900) Turks and their caiques, Bosphorus Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 36 x 60 cm Important original frame in stuccoed and gilded wood, with canals and foliage in classical style. With cartouche of the Société des amis des arts de Bordeaux. Exhibition: - Société des Amis des arts de Bordeaux, 1868. Fabius Brest painted for about twenty years the visual memories of his four-year stay in Turkey that he made from 1855. Between 1857 and 1896, he exhibited numerous paintings at the Paris Salon and in the French salons, evoking Istanbul and the lively life of the Bosphorus. Our painting, with its clear and soft light, is characteristic of the art of Brest who knows how to poetize a small village on the banks of the Bosphorus with its fishermen in multicolored costumes.
