Auguste Nicolas Caïn (1821/1894) " Grand Boeuf ou Taureau de Nîmes " Original plaster intended for the bronze edition. Rare reduction of the monumental model in gilded cast iron by the Denonvilliers foundry exhibited around the Trocadero fountain for the 1878 exhibition in front of the famous Moorish palace and for the 1900 Universal Exhibition. It was accompanied by 3 other monumental sculptures, currently exhibited in front of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris A horse by Pierre Louis Rouillard, A rhinoceros by Alfred Jacquemart, An elephant by Emmanuel Frémiet These 4 sculptures were moved in 1936 and our ox was installed in Nîmes in 1937 at the top of a pilaster not allowing the public to see the agricultural attributes on the naturalist terrace (Soc, Yoke and sheaves of wheat) . It thus became "Le Taureau de Nîmes" (The Bull of Nîmes). It bears the artist's AC Monogram on the upper right thigh. The horns, ears and tail are missing, which were removed for the making of the mould intended for the edition. Covered with shellac allowing the demoulding. No known bronze edition in this size.
